Terminology

  • Node: A device that implements IP
  • Router: a node that forwards IP packets not explicitly addressed to itself.
  • Host: Any node that is not a Router

IPv6 Configuration methods

It is possible to configure IPv6 addresses on interfaces in four different ways:

  1. IPv6 Stateless Autoconfiguration of Interface
  2. IPv6 manual configuration of Interface
  3. DHCPv6 configuration of Interface
  4. A combination of IPv6 Stateless Autoconfiguration and DHCPv6 described in DHCPv6 Other Options
